1949

Before World War II, the jumping classes were predominantly military men. Following the end of the Second World War, classes started opening up to more civilians. A prominent example of one of the key military figures in the earlier days of the sport is Major Gordon Gayford, pictured here in 1949 with Gamin. Major Gayford was the father of another riding great, Tom Gayford.
